SAT Registration Policy

The SAT is administered 7 times a year: January, March (sometimes April), May, June, October, November, and December. It is generally administered on a Saturday. Most students take the test in the spring of their junior year and many students retake the test in the fall of their senior year. You can register for the SAT through the College Board. Regular registration closes about a month before each test, and late registration closes about 2 weeks before each test.

The SAT Questionnaire

The SAT questionnaire accompanies registration and is a useful tool for students and colleges alike. The questionnaire tells a college about a student’s interests and helps students see how the colleges they are considering compare with one another. To modify the questionnaire, visit the College Board website or contact the College Board at 866-756-7346. The College Board is open Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 8:45 p.m., ET (8 a.m.-5:45 p.m.; after the June test date through August). Let them know that you would like to request an SAT Questionnaire update form.

Rescheduling the Test Appointment

Rescheduling the date, time, or location of the test must be done by the Wednesday that falls two-and-a-half weeks prior to the exam. Any change requires an additional fee of $28 and can be done online or by phone. To make the change online, just sign into your College Board account. To make the change by phone, call 866-756-7346 between 8 a.m. and 8:45 p.m., ET Monday through Friday.

Retaking the Test

Most colleges accept Score Choice, a new feature implemented by the College Board in March of 2009, which allows students to choose which score(s) to send to colleges. However, some schools, including many elite schools, still ask students to submit all their test scores. We recommend that students contact the admissions departments of their prospective schools to find out if they accept Score Choice or whether they request all test scores.
